Listening to Ryanhood and Goo Goo Dolls allows me to picture the skylines of major cities in the US, I don’t know why. This makes me feel kind of sad and down because of the fact that I probably won’t seeing them anytime soon because unfortunately my parents are financially capable enough to send me to Boston, and I really don’t think I’m good enough to get a partial scholarship let alone a full one.
I love music and the only place I feel that I can grow as a musician is none other than in the states where just about everything goes. Does all of this mean anything? Yes it does - patriotism. A lot of people talk about patriotism and how we should be proud to be Malaysian, but to me Malaysia is just a place I was born in and I feel no ties to it or any obligations for that matter (i.e. national pride, serving your country blah blah). I think Shi Yan knows how I feel because he feels the same way about Singapore. We’re both sorely disappointed with our country and countrymen and our social structure and how we present ourselves to the world.
Admittedly Malaysia might have had its accomplishments, like Nicole David being the top squash player in the world, but I mean geez, other countries have had top players waaaaaay before us and suddenly when we get our turn it’s like a huge deal. It’s like how a 5 year old kid manages to tie his own shoelace, and how to a 20 year old it’s almost an unconscious act. I mean our level of mentality is like so low.
To quote suanie.net,
The “Malaysia Boleh!” spirit has since produced many achievers and achievements, and has been a cornerstone of the success story that is the new Malaysia.
The only thing we need to achieve is originality. For fuck sake, go coin a new phrase or eat an ice-cream, whatever.
I couldn’t agree more. Malaysian’s are so unoriginal when it comes to almost everything. It’s painfully embarrassing to see local comedy on TV that is soooooooo obvious that it’s trying to do a rip-off of a famous US/UK television and I think I remember seeing a comedy here that reminded me of Friends meets Two Guys and A Girl, and our local music scene which is horrible horrible HORRIBLE. Not to mention for some strange reason there are TONS and TONS and TONSSSSSSSS _(#_%*_@$*@@_ of god damn mat rock bands out there that sound like each other and Metallica!!
It’s strange because there are probably a couple of local english acts that deserve to be signed but instead we get tons of Malay pop and rock acts. I’m not being racist and I have nothing against Malay people but it just seems to be the way this country is wired and I don’t know but I just feel it’s really unfair. Understandably the majority of this country is populated by Malay people, and there are still tons of undeveloped kampungs but why does it feel like we’re lowering ourselves for them, instead of trying to advance and hope they’d catch up.
Geez! It’s like we took a social crap on ourselves and forgot to wipe. Bah this has been a very ranty post and I don’t know why..must be cause of today’s Ear Training assessment..damn.
